Abhinandan was born on 21 June 1983. From the 2019 India-Pakistan standoff, he had been held captive for 60 hours Pakistan following his airplane was shot down in an aerial dogfight. He had been conferred the Vir Chakra gallantry award in August 2019.
Abhinandan was born on 21 June 1983. Abhinandan’s family is from Thirupanamoor, a village about 19 kilometers from Kanchipuram. His father hailed as an Air Marshal (OF-8) at the Indian Air Force and his mom is a Physician.
Abhinandan did his early education in Sainik Welfare School, Amatavatinagar at Chennai.  He graduated in the National Defence Academy, and has been commissioned to the battle (fighter) flow of the Indian Air Force as a flying officer on 19 June 2004.
He had been educated in the IAF centers in Bathinda and Halwara, encouraged to flight lieutenant on 19 June 2006, and to squadron leader on 8 July 2010. Abhinandan was a Su-30 MKI fighter pilot prior to being delegated to the MiG-21 Bison squadron. He had been encouraged to wing commander on 19 June 2017.
Abhinandan is married to a retired IAF Squadron pioneer and resides in Chennai. They have 2 kids. Abhinandan’s sentence”Tea is excellent” made him really famous.
On 27 February 2019, Varthaman was flying a MiG-21 for a component of a sortie which was scrambled to intercept an intrusion by Pakistan aircraft to Jammu and Kashmir. From the dogfight that ensued, he crossed into Pakistan territory where he was hit by a missile.
It had been claimed by local villagers that Varthaman might be identified as an Indian pilot from the Indian flag on his parachute.
Upon landing, Varthaman asked the villagers when he had been in India, where a young boy responded in the affirmative. Varthaman allegedly followed up with pro-India slogans and asked for drinking water when informing the locals of a back injury.
The natives responded with pro-Pakistan slogans, and Varthaman started to run while firing warning shots. He ran for about 500 meters, to a small pond, where he tried to sink and consume some of his records. Subsequently, he was seized and manhandled by the villagers before being rescued by the Pakistan Army.
Later that day, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs affirmed that an Indian pilot had been missing in action following a MiG-21 Bison fighter plane that was missing while engaging with Pakistani jets.
A statement published by the IAF also stated that before his MiG’s crashing, he’d managed to take down a PAF Lockheed Martin F-16.
On 2 March 2019, almost two days after the aerial engagement between PAF and IAF, in a press briefing that the IAF displayed the sections of AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles that could be used exclusively by the PAF’s Lockheed Martin F-16.
They also claimed they had identified the digital signatures of the aircraft and verified that it was the Lockheed Martin F-16 which was utilized.
In accordance with an agreement between the United States and Pakistan, Pakistan is allowed to utilize the Lockheed Martin F-16 against terrorism only. Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations Director General refuted the subsequent claims and claimed that F-16s weren’t used in any respect.
Repatriation and subsequent developments
On 28 February 2019, Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan declared at a joint sitting of the Parliament of Pakistan the authorities had decided to launch Abhinandan another day as a”gesture of peace”.
A request was filed prior to the Islamabad High Court looking for an injunction to stop his release but was dismissed by the court the same day.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan said that his government announced the launch of the IAF Wing Commander from a desire for peace and there was no compulsion or pressure on Pakistan; as was indicated by the Indian press.
Varthaman crossed the India-Pakistan boundary at Wagah on 1 March 2019. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the launch of Abhinandan in a political rally, claiming that the state was proud of him. Hours before his release, a new video was released to the Pakistani media that revealed Varthaman praising the Pakistani military when criticizing the Indian media.
The video seemed to be heavily edited and the IAF later claimed that the movie was taken under duress. A health checkup upon his return situated multiple bruises and a fractured rib but no’significant injuries’. Abhinandan stated that the Pakistani authorities didn’t physically torture him subjected him to significant”psychological harassment”.
Pakistan maintains that he had been treated in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.
